My First Study Abroad

Updated: May 5, 2020

I have traveled around the USA, but I had never been out of the country. On May 9, 2019, I went on my first study abroad trip to the Dominican Republic with the Coles Scholars Program. I was excited, nervous, and terrified all at the same time.

The purpose of this trip was to practice consulting abroad. My class helped local businesses with social media, community tourism, and a boxed impact project. I learned so much about the culture of the Dominican Republic. We stayed with local host families, where we quickly learned that living conditions were quite different. It was easy to get sick because the water was unsafe to consume. My favorite part was playing with my host family and attempting to spark up a conversation.

This trip was amazing in the end. It was great that my class was able to consult with local businesses as well as learn something from this trip. If you ever have the chance to travel abroad, I highly recommend that you do!
